Bloodstone (Heliotrope) - Properties, benefits, uses, meanings, associations

Bloodstone, an essential healing crystal for any collector is an opaque chalcedony consisting of green quartz with red or yellow jasper and traces of iron. Blue quartz varieties are now being named as bloodstone too. It is also known by the name Heliotrope, Greek for "sun turner", where as Bloodstone comes from the middle ages, when it was believed to contain the blood of Jesus Christ.

Known for it's benefits when navigating challenges or difficult times, Bloodstone has become known as a stone for spiritual warriors, helping us recognise when a strategic retreat from potential danger is needed a or providing us with courage to face up to difficult truths and manage our way through, whilst retaining an altruistic mindset and considering community needs over our own. It aids commitment and stamina during hardship, supporting us with self-sufficiency when facing resistance and preventing discouragement. Bloodstone is a useful tool for those going through a spiritual awakening. It grounds the heart chakra and helps us maintain present moment thinking. It helps us hang on to our faith in the divine and enhances both divine connection and intuition, as well as dispelling negative energies from the auric field, thus both protecting and cleansing . It's fascinating folk history includes use in weather control and as an audible oracle too!

As one would expect from it's name, Bloodstone is attributed to blood health and flow, being associated to the circulation, bone marrow, and anaemia, as well as being presented to persons with leukaemia in what has become a modern-day tradition. Following this association, It is used in wound healing and for conditions of the female endocrine system. Yet it's uses in healing reach far beyond the blood, with it's associations to multiple body systems including the lymphatic system and metabolism, immunity, liver and kidneys, and the bladder and intestines. Interestingly, the word "flow" is frequently used and this seems to encompass it's general association list well. You could try reaching for bloodstone when suffering with constipation or diarrhoea, sluggish metabolism, irritated bladder, or puss and blood loss of any kind. It is even used to help "flow" into a peaceful nights sleep when placed in water by the bed!
